Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced nearly $100 million in new grant funding aimed at enhancing New York’s resilience to extreme weather. This funding supports nature-based and green infrastructure projects designed to reduce flood risks and improve community safety.
The grants come from two key programs:
Resilient Watersheds Grant (RWG) Program – With $60 million available, this program focuses on comprehensive projects that strengthen infrastructure, reduce flood and ice jam risks, and protect communities. Eligible projects can include dam removals and stream restorations.
Community Resilience and Flood Risk Reduction Grant Program – This $40 million program is split into two categories: $20 million for coastal rehabilitation projects and another $20 million for inland flooding initiatives. This aims to support communities that are involved in the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.
These efforts are part of the larger $4.2 billion Environmental Bond Act of 2022, designed to support clean water initiatives and combat climate change. In fact, New York is working to become one of the most climate-resilient states in the country. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of these investments for the safety and sustainability of communities.
Experts agree that investing in climate resilience is crucial. A recent report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found that extreme weather events are occurring at higher rates, costing the U.S. billions each year. The right actions now can save lives and protect resources in the future.
The funding is available for municipalities and nonprofit organizations, making it a collaborative approach to tackling climate challenges. Applications can be submitted through the Consolidated Funding Application portal, with a deadline set for June 26, 2026.
State officials underscore the importance of these initiatives in protecting residents from the impacts of climate change. As New York takes these important steps, other states look on for strategies in sustainable development amid rising environmental pressures.
