Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is leaving the Trump administration for a private sector position amid an internal investigation into her conduct. White House communications director Steven Cheung confirmed her departure, highlighting her work in protecting American workers and promoting fair labor practices.
In her statement on X, Chavez-DeRemer expressed pride in her achievements during her time in office. However, her tenure was marred by controversy. An investigation was underway regarding allegations of inappropriate behavior, including claims of a personal relationship with a security team member and misconduct involving her staff.
Chavez-DeRemer’s brief time in office began in March 2025, during a period when the Trump administration aimed to cut federal funding and reduce the workforce at the Labor Department, which saw a nearly 25% decrease in its staff by February 2026. This reduction raised concerns among policymakers about the adequacy of resources to maintain essential labor statistics.
During her leadership, the Labor Department sought to overturn more than 60 workplace regulations it deemed outdated. This included efforts to reduce safety standards in various sectors, which drew criticism from several experts. For instance, Andrew Stettner from the Century Foundation stated, “These rollbacks could have serious implications for worker safety and job security, especially in industries already struggling.”
Chavez-DeRemer’s departure marks the third Cabinet exit in recent weeks as Trump’s administration continues to face significant challenges and changes.
