Big news for The University of Texas at Austin! Thanks to a historic $750 million donation from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the university’s new hospital will be called the UT Dell Medical Center. This facility will be part of the upcoming UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research, which aims to blend clinical care with advanced technology like artificial intelligence.
At a recent press conference, Michael and Susan Dell, alongside university and state officials, shared their vision of a top-notch medical center that uses cutting-edge technology from the ground up. “We’re creating a future-focused environment that enhances health through innovation,” they said.
This donation is one of the largest ever made to a university in the U.S. The Dells have contributed over $1 billion to UT Austin, including a significant $50 million gift that helped launch the Dell Medical School in 2013. Their new investment will also support scholarships, student housing, and UT’s Texas Advanced Computing Center, making a tremendous impact on the student community.
Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti, the dean of the Dell Medical School, describes the Dells’ contribution as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity.” This new approach will focus on patient-centered care, using AI and technology to improve health through prevention and precision medicine.
The campus will stretch over 300 acres in North Austin, including a 27-acre site for the medical center. Previously, plans were in place to build downtown at the old Frank Erwin Center, but officials decided that the current site would allow for better patient access and future growth.
Initially, two separate hospitals were planned: one dedicated to specialty care and the other to cancer treatment through MD Anderson. Now, the MD Anderson facility will be integrated into the UT Dell Medical Center, making it easier for local residents to access cancer care without traveling to Houston.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott attended the announcement and highlighted the economic benefits the medical center will bring. He said, “Texas is already a leader in business and technology. This new center will position us at the forefront of health care innovation.”
Looking ahead, UT aims to raise an ambitious $10 billion to establish itself as one of the top ten medical centers in the U.S. The hospital will have between 300 and 500 beds and include outpatient facilities and a full-service emergency department. They plan to open in 2030 and fully phase in specialty programs by 2032.
