The Milford Food Bank recently celebrated the opening of its new warehouse on May 2. Community members, volunteers, and local partners gathered for this special occasion.
The event was lively, featuring free lunch from a food truck and ice cream for attendees. A unique ribbon-cutting ceremony symbolized a major milestone in the food bank’s history. Operations Manager Bill Doege drove a forklift through a ribbon to mark the first delivery to the facility, which was loaded with soap—a nod to the founder’s initial pantry donations.
Dozens of people flocked to the open house. Many were curious about the food bank’s new capabilities. Doege expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “This building is here because of people who believed in it.”
The need for food assistance has surged recently. According to a report from Feeding America, around 42 million people in the U.S. faced food insecurity in 2021—a number that has only grown due to inflation and the lingering effects of the pandemic. This backdrop highlights the importance of the Milford Food Bank’s expansion.
Development Manager Angie Deak noted that planning for the new facility took years. “The idea started to take shape a couple of years ago, and we broke ground about 11 months ago,” she said. The positive response from the community allowed the project to move faster than expected.
The new building increases storage for food, improving operational efficiency. It features a larger warehouse, a packing room for bulk items, and space for staff. These upgrades aim to nearly double the food bank’s reach, serving over 240 partner organizations in northern Indiana and southern Michigan.
Milford Food Bank collaborates with various local businesses and contractors, which contributed labor and materials to help bring the project to life. This highlights the community’s commitment to fighting hunger. With the new space, the organization aims to serve more people effectively. Deak emphasized that this expansion isn’t just about capacity; it’s about being ready to meet growing community needs.
The event concluded with a celebratory atmosphere, as families and volunteers shared meals and stories. The Milford Food Bank’s new facility isn’t just a building; it’s a new chapter in its ongoing mission to support the community.
