Seventeen American passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius will quarantine in Nebraska due to a hantavirus outbreak. The state has a specialized facility for handling serious contagious diseases, according to health officials.
The ship is set to dock in Tenerife, Canary Islands on Sunday, where health teams will meet the passengers. The U.S. State Department is organizing their return home. At the quarantine facility, doctors will monitor the passengers closely. Thankfully, all of them are currently healthy with no symptoms.
Should anyone show signs of illness, they would be moved to a high-security biocontainment unit. Dr. Angela Hewlett, the unit’s medical director, emphasized that this situation is not comparable to Covid-19 levels and does not seem to pose a risk of a widespread outbreak.
On Friday, the World Health Organization confirmed six cases of the Andes hantavirus, with additional probable cases. Sadly, two confirmed cases have resulted in fatalities. This has raised concerns as countries attempt to trace passengers from the Hondius.
Interestingly, a woman in Spain who recently traveled on the same flight as one of the deceased is being treated while awaiting test results. Spanish health officials noted she had limited contact with the infected individual.
In addition to the American passengers, recent cases have also emerged on the remote island of Tristan da Cunha. A local resident has been identified with suspected hantavirus after travel on the Hondius. This marks an alarming expansion of the virus’s reach.
Experts from the WHO are investigating the source of the outbreak, which is believed to be tied to contact with rodents common in regions of Argentina.
