Seattle police have identified a suspect in the tragic murder of a University of Washington student on May 10. They’re urging the community to help by reviewing the photos of the suspect.
The suspect is described as a light-skinned black man, around 5’7″ tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a long-sleeve dark blue zip shirt with a light triangle emblem, a white collared shirt underneath, and dirty blue jeans. He also had dark shoes that appeared worn.
Detective Eric Munoz emphasized the seriousness of the situation. “This person is armed and dangerous,” he said. Authorities want to ensure the suspect is caught swiftly to prevent further harm.
Officers responded to reports of a stabbing at the Nordheim Court Apartments around 10:10 p.m. They discovered a 19-year-old woman in the laundry room, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. It’s believed she was a UW student and a transgender woman, though the medical examiner is working to confirm her identity.
Witnesses noted concerns about security at the apartment complex. Some students mentioned that the laundry room door lock was faulty and that there was a recent break-in. Bella, a UW sophomore, expressed her shock: “I had no clue about the break-in until it was too late.”
Emma Saika, a junior who lives nearby, shared her feelings of fear and frustration. “There’s a lot of concern about safety,” she said.
In light of this incident, discussions around campus safety and security have intensified. According to a recent survey by the National Center for Campus Public Safety, 31% of students feel unsafe on their campuses. Experts emphasize that universities need to enhance security measures and improve communication with students to address their concerns.
