Join the Scio Food Waste Challenge from May 18–22, and win prizes from local businesses!
Scio Township is launching the Scio Food Waste Challenge, a free five-day event aimed at teaching residents how small changes can significantly reduce food waste at home. This not only helps the environment but can also save money at the grocery store.
This challenge builds on the township’s Food Waste Compost Pilot Program, which started in November 2025 and already has over 100 participants. This program set up a 24/7 food waste drop-off station at Township Hall, turning food scraps into nutritious compost. The challenge takes this initiative further by encouraging sustainable practices in residents’ kitchens.
During the week, participants will receive daily emails with simple tips and links to local resources that promote reducing food waste. It’s a great chance to connect with neighbors who share a passion for sustainability.
To sweeten the deal, everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing for local business prizes, including a $50 gift card to Kroger and a $50 Visa debit card. You can join as an individual or team up with friends and family to make it even more fun.
“Food waste is a major contributor to household carbon emissions, yet it often goes unnoticed,” said Jan Culbertson from the Scio Township Environmental Sustainability Task Force. “This challenge is an easy way for everyone to make a substantial impact right from their kitchens.”
Did you know that an estimated 30% to 40% of the food supply in the U.S. goes to waste? By taking part in this challenge, residents can help combat this issue and move toward more sustainable living. According to the EPA, reducing food waste can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, creating a healthier environment for everyone.
Registration is open now at zerowaste.org/scio. Get ready to change your habits and potentially win some great prizes!
