NEW ULM — In an exciting game on Monday, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (BLHS) made a stunning comeback to defeat New Ulm Cathedral 56-54. The Mustangs found themselves down by 13 points with just seven minutes left. However, they scored 21 of the final 27 points to turn the game around.
Lily Hubin from BLHS played a key role in the victory. After a tough start, she finished with 24 points, including a crucial 3-pointer that tied the game and a game-winning steal. “At halftime, we had a wakeup call,” Hubin said, reflecting on the shift in momentum. “We needed to play defense and execute our offense better.” In the second half, she managed to score 15 points, showing her determination to win.
Hubin wasn’t alone in her effort; Jamie Novotny contributed 11 points and Elizabeth Ovitt added 9. Novotny emphasized the importance of teamwork and defensive focus in their second-half push. “We started slow, but we knew we had to come back strong,” she said.
New Ulm Cathedral had a strong start to the game and held the lead for most of it. Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 18 points, while Jayde Altermatt scored 17. Cathedral coach Dave Wilfahrt praised his team’s effort but acknowledged the missed opportunities at the end. “We did a lot of good things, but we just couldn’t finish,” he said.
The game began with Cathedral taking an early lead thanks to some impressive shooting, including multiple 3-pointers from Maddie Gilles, who scored 12 points before leaving the game with an injury. Her absence was felt as BLHS rallied, starting their comeback with Hubin’s two 3-pointers late in the game.
As the clock wound down, BLHS closed the gap with a series of successful shots. Hubin’s corner 3 tied the game at 54, and her steal and layup put the Mustangs ahead for good. Despite their efforts, the Greyhounds couldn’t sink their last shot and walked away disappointed.
BLHS now holds a record of 11-8 and will host Springfield on Friday. On the other side, Cathedral, now 4-17, will travel to Cedar Mountain on Thursday. Both teams showed resilience and competitive spirit in a thrilling matchup that kept fans at the edge of their seats.
