Celebrating the Class of 2026: A New Journey Begins
On May 16, 2026, Virginia Wesleyan University gathered to honor the Class of 2026 at their Commencement Ceremony. Families, friends, and faculty filled TowneBank Arena, celebrating a momentous occasion as graduates crossed the stage to receive their diplomas.
A Warm Welcome
President Scott D. Miller kicked off the ceremony by congratulating the graduates. He highlighted their dedication and hard work, reminding them of the many challenges they overcame to reach this point. “You did it! Your journey has just begun,” he said, urging them to stay connected to the university.
Honoring Excellence
Throughout the event, several faculty members received special recognition. Dr. Gavin Pate earned the Samuel Nelson Gray Distinguished Teaching Award, while Dr. Elizabeth Malcolm and Dr. Rebecca Hooker were also honored for their outstanding contributions to education.
A special highlight came when Hannah Gautreaux ’26 received the General Douglas MacArthur Award for Emerging Leaders. Not only did she graduate, but she was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, marking an exciting new chapter in her life.
Words of Wisdom
Commencement speaker Clifford B. Fleet III shared insights drawn from his experiences in leadership and public service. He encouraged the graduates to view their education as a stepping stone to active participation in their communities. “Your generation will help define what’s next,” he said. Fleet emphasized the importance of resilience, adaptability, and service, urging graduates to make a positive impact wherever they go.
“History is something we shape, not just inherit,” he stressed. He reminded graduates that it’s okay not to have all the answers right now; what matters is the courage to keep learning and growing.
A Bright Future
As graduates received their diplomas, a sense of accomplishment filled the air. President Miller and Provost Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson awarded degrees in various fields, from arts to nursing. Each graduate was met with cheers and applause, a testament to their hard work and dedication.
The ceremony also paid tribute to two honorary degree recipients: Cliff Fleet and Cecelia T. Tucker. Tucker, a beloved educator and civic leader who passed away, was honored posthumously.

As the event wrapped up, President Miller shared an inspiring message: “You are the architects of the future.” With heartfelt encouragement, he wished the graduates the best in their new journey ahead.
