BYU golf director Todd Miller noted the team’s dynamic start, with six birdies in the first three holes. Individually, freshman Parker Bunn is tied for ninth overall with a 4-under 67. Junior Peter Kim also played well at 3-under. Other contributors include freshmen Kihei Akina and senior Simon Kwon, while senior Tyson Shelley struggled with a 2-over.
On the other hand, Utah’s team is struggling to stay afloat. At the Columbus Regional, they are currently in last place, sitting at 35-over and 15 shots behind the fifth-place team. Their chances of advancing look bleak as they trail Wright State by two shots.
Some noteworthy statistics show that in previous years, many teams that performed well in their regionals have gone on to make a mark at the nationals. For example, last year BYU won the Reno Regional.
