Hundreds of people came together in mid-May at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, for a health expo that aimed to promote hope and well-being in the community.
This event, organized by the Solomon Islands Mission with help from local Adventists and health advocates, offered free health screenings, medical advice, and educational sessions. It addressed the rising issue of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the region and created community connections ahead of the Solomon Islands for Christ evangelistic initiative coming in July.
Visitors to the expo enjoyed various free services, including blood pressure and sugar tests, dental checkups, eye exams, physiotherapy, counseling, and lifestyle education. The goal was not just to provide immediate health support but also to encourage healthier living physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Travis Ronnie, the associate Communication director for the Solomon Islands Mission, noted the positive feedback from attendees. “The health expo went really well,” he said. “Many people participated in health checks and community activities.”
One significant outcome was raising awareness about the importance of early health intervention. “We want to encourage people to take charge of their health,” Ronnie explained. This focus on preventative care and healthy living is crucial, especially since Solomon Islands faces increasing health challenges. According to the World Health Organization, NCDs account for about 75% of deaths in the Pacific Islands, making events like this even more essential.
The expo sparked interest in community health initiatives, and people are eager to get involved in ongoing health education. “It was a great chance to collaborate with different health groups and community projects,” Ronnie added.
Following the health expo, outreach efforts have continued through a Schools for Christ campaign in Adventist schools across the islands. Titled “Truth Revealed,” this initiative invites students, staff, and parents to engage with Bible messages.
Looking ahead, the South Pacific Division for Christ initiative plans island-wide evangelistic meetings from July 5 to 18, helping the community stay connected and informed.
