A transgender athlete from Jurupa Valley High School, AB Hernandez, made headlines again at the recent CIF State Track Championships in Clovis, California. She triumphed in two events and secured third place in another, sparking both support and protests.
Hernandez kicked off her day with a long jump, landing at 20 feet, 2.25 inches, which earned her third place. The competition was fierce, with Ellie McCuskey-Hay and Gianna Gonzalez both jumping 20 feet, 3.5 inches, but McCuskey-Hay’s second jump determined her as the winner.
Under CIF rules, transgender athletes receive medals but do not alter the standings for cisgender girls, a policy that has drawn mixed reactions. Critics argue it’s unfair, while supporters say it promotes inclusion.
Hernandez excelled in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 10 inches to take first place. She also won the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 8.75 inches, while Daniela Hughes secured a close second.
Last year, Hernandez’s participation also stirred controversy. California’s Republican governor candidates, Sheriff Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton, publicly opposed trans athletes in female sports. Hilton even rallied protesters with signs emphasizing that girls’ sports should be for girls only.
In contrast, Democratic candidate Tom Steyer voiced his support for Hernandez, praising her achievements. He highlighted the importance of protecting trans youth, especially given the high rates of mental health issues and suicide attempts in that community. According to a study by the Trevor Project, more than 40% of transgender and nonbinary youth consider suicide.
Hernandez, who graduated recently, emphasized her focus on track amidst the noise around her. “Track is a very singular sport,” she said. “Once you’re on the track, you just stay focused on the track.” She remains largely unfazed by the protests, stating, “I just laughed; I don’t care.”
Her involvement in sports has gained national attention, including from former President Donald Trump, who criticized California’s policies, suggesting they could jeopardize federal funding for schools.
