Google said generative AI is changing healthcare and that it is being used to explore real-world health challenges across Africa, including cervical cancer screening and maternal health support.
In collaboration with three pan-African data science and machine learning communities — SisonkeBiotik, Ro’ya, and DS-I Africa — Google hosted an Africa-wide Data Science for Health Ideathon focused on using Google’s open Health AI models to address health challenges.
Google said more than 30 submissions were received, and six finalist teams were selected for their ideas, foundations and potential impact across African health systems. The finalists received mentorship from global experts and technical resources from Google Research and Google DeepMind.
The company said the effort reflects interest across the African continent in using AI to create local solutions to local priorities in health, agriculture and climate. Google described the ideathon as part of its broader initiatives on AI for Africa, including health, education, food security, infrastructure and languages.
