Indian Navy Chief Issues Strong Warning to Chinese PLA’s Growing Presence in the Indian Ocean: India’s Strategic Response Explained

New Delhi: China has been boosting its naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) for years. According to Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, there are typically 6 to 8 Chinese naval ships in these waters at any given time. He emphasized that India is fully aware of their activities, and knowing “who goes where” gives India a significant advantage.

Speaking at The Chanakya Dialogues conclave, focused on India’s future security, Admiral Tripathi stated that India has effectively managed to keep Chinese forces at bay. He mentioned that while China claims to be in the IOR for anti-piracy efforts, their true activities are much broader.

China’s presence isn’t limited to naval vessels; they’ve also established research ships in the region. Admiral Tripathi noted that their initial claims of fighting piracy are outdated. Instead, Chinese vessels are engaged in activities like deep-sea fishing, which can disrupt local ecosystems.

India is using a combination of manned and unmanned technologies for maritime awareness, along with satellite monitoring and international partnerships. This enables Indian forces to track movements and activities in the IOR effectively. Admiral Tripathi reassured that they are keeping a close watch on Chinese operations and will ensure that China doesn’t infringe upon India’s areas of interest.

The Navy Chief also addressed the military relationship between China and Pakistan. He reported that China has been providing maritime equipment to Pakistan for over two decades, including frigates and submarines. This ongoing support raises concerns about maritime security for India, especially with the recent deal for additional submarines.

Admiral Tripathi emphasized that India is well aware of the potential threats that these developments pose and is taking steps to counteract them. “India is doing everything necessary to protect our interests and ensure maritime safety,” he said.
