Uttarakhand’s Climate Crisis: Experts Warn of Impacts at Twice the Global Rate – Insights from Dehradun

Dehradun: Recently, experts gathered in Dehradun to discuss an urgent issue: climate change is hitting Uttarakhand almost twice as hard as the rest of the world. This revelation came during the launch of “Making Molehills of Mountains,” a book by the Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation that explores Uttarakhand’s climate crises.

Aditya Pundir, director of the Climate Reality Project for South Asia, emphasized the unique vulnerabilities of Uttarakhand’s Himalayan region. He noted that as you go higher in altitude, the effects of climate change become more severe. Deforestation and excessive tree cutting for development are major factors leading to serious water shortages. Pundir called for sustainable solutions like solar energy and better infrastructure to help reduce migration from the hills.

N S Napalchyal, a former chief secretary of Uttarakhand, mentioned that the state seems to experience nearly every natural disaster except tsunamis. He stressed the importance of blending traditional knowledge with modern techniques in disaster management. Uncontrolled construction activities are only worsening the environmental crisis, he pointed out.

On a legal front, Supreme Court lawyer Rajiv Dutta expressed serious concerns about projects harming the delicate ecosystem of Uttarakhand. He has been proactive, filing multiple public interest litigations to address these environmental threats.

The second edition of the book is a tribute to the late environmentalist Vimla Bahuguna, whose dedication to conservation has inspired many. Her son, activist Rajeev Nayan Bahuguna, made a poignant observation: prioritizing the environment is critical, even more so than job creation. "Without a healthy planet, all human activities become meaningless," he said.

The current situation reflects a growing global trend. According to a recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), many mountainous regions are warming at a rate that is higher than the global average. The urgency for action has never been more evident, as communities around the world face similar challenges.

As conversations about climate change become more common, social media trends show a rise in advocacy for environmental protection. More young people are using platforms like Instagram and Twitter to promote sustainable practices and raise awareness about climate-related issues.

The challenges in Uttarakhand serve as a reminder that everyone has a role in protecting the environment, not just locally but globally.
