Great news about NASA’s Juno spacecraft! After a brief hiccup, Juno is back to normal operations. It has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016, gathering valuable data about the largest planet in our solar system.

So, what happened? On April 4, Juno unexpectedly went into “safe mode.” This is a protective state that spacecraft can enter when something seems off. Juno triggered this mode twice that day — first just before its 71st close flyby of Jupiter, called perijove, and again shortly after. During safe mode, the spacecraft powers down its instruments until everything is checked out.
Going into safe mode isn’t uncommon. Other spacecraft have done it too. For instance, the Hubble Space Telescope recently entered safe mode while it dealt with gyroscope issues. Juno itself has been through this before and always bounced back.
Scientists suspect that Juno’s safe mode might relate to the intense radiation belts around Jupiter. These belts are filled with charged particles that move at incredibly high speeds, making them much harsher than the Van Allen radiation belts around Earth. NASA noted that to protect its delicate electronics, Juno is equipped with a sturdy titanium radiation vault.
Looking ahead, Juno will dive back into the radiation belts on May 7. Hopefully, this time, it will stay online without a hitch!
