Accelerate Your Career: Langley University’s Fast-Track Brewing and Engineering Programs

Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is rolling out exciting new options for students interested in science and brewing. This fall, KPU introduces shorter study paths that make it easier for students to kickstart their careers.

Starting with the one-year Certificate in Brewing, this program caters to those who feel that a two-year diploma is too long. “We want to meet students where they are,” says Amy Jeon, dean of the Faculty of Science. “These new programs offer flexibility, allowing students to find what works for them.”

The Certificate in Brewing provides a solid grounding in brewing science, along with hands-on experience in KPU’s award-winning teaching brewery. “Students will gain practical skills that are crucial for the brewing industry,” states Dominic Bernard, an instructor in the program. Additionally, there are four micro-credentials available in areas like brewing science and beer sensory evaluation, giving even more choices for students.

This format makes it easier for students to work while they study. They can finish the certificate, enter the workforce, and then return to pursue further education whenever they’re ready. “This way, they can earn meaningful credentials and gain real-world experience,” Jeon adds.

The new two-year Diploma in Engineering Physics also complements KPU’s existing programs. It opens up pathways to degrees in engineering, physics, or math. Dr. Michael Poon, chair of Engineering, emphasizes that this diploma focuses on blending theory with practical skills, preparing students for careers in science and technology. Importantly, international graduates of this program are eligible for work permits, which can be a significant advantage.

In a rapidly changing job market, shorter, focused programs are becoming increasingly popular. According to a recent report by the National Center for Education Statistics, many students are opting for credentials over traditional degrees to meet employment demands. This trend aligns well with KPU’s new offerings.

KPU continues to champion hands-on education, maintaining a variety of programs, including seven bachelor’s degrees, five diplomas, and more. With these new pathways, students have more options than ever to explore careers in science and brewing while balancing their studies with work or other commitments.
