Just weeks after Apple Cinemas opened its new location at 1000 Van Ness in San Francisco, Apple Inc. has filed a lawsuit against them. The tech giant claims that the name “Apple Cinemas” could confuse consumers, making them think there’s a connection to the well-known brand.

When Apple Cinemas Van Ness opened in early July, it marked a fresh start for the long-closed AMC theater. This new venue is part of a chain that primarily operates on the East Coast. Local media emphasized that there’s no affiliation with Apple, the tech company. Yet, Apple’s leaders apparently feel that more distinction is needed.

A report from The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Apple Inc. is demanding the removal of “Apple” from the cinema’s name and seeking unspecified damages. “Consumers shouldn’t think an ‘Apple Cinemas’ theater is linked to our brand,” said Apple attorney Miranda Means in the lawsuit.

The name “Apple” isn’t unique; it has historical ties to the Beatles’ record label, Apple Records. Still, this legal battle raises important questions. Apple Inc. produces films now, including titles like Killers of the Flower Moon. People might get confused about where they’re watching these movies, especially since Apple has a history of streaming films through services like iTunes.

Interestingly, Apple Cinemas attempted to trademark “Apple Cinemas” and “ACX – Apple Cinematic Experience” last year, but those requests were denied. Trademark officials cited the close relation of those names to Apple’s own media products. Reports suggest that Apple had previously sent Apple Cinemas a cease-and-desist letter, which was ignored.

There’s also been some chatter online about the theater’s reputation. Some reviews describe Apple Cinemas as “greasy” and “dirty.” Although the Yelp page for Apple Cinemas Van Ness does not show overwhelming negativity, many viewers expressed disappointment over promised reclining seats that have yet to be installed.

Apple Cinemas’ rapid growth might have caught Apple Inc.’s eye. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the chain is planned to open 100 locations across the U.S. over the next decade, aiming to become a major player in North America’s movie exhibition market.
