Assam CM Sarma Leads 2nd Core Committee Meeting for Year-Long Celebration of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s Birth Centenary

Guwahati, Assam – On August 28, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the second meeting for the yearlong celebration of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary. The festivities kick off on September 8, 2025, with a major event planned for September 13, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay tribute to the legendary musician known as the Bard of the Brahmaputra.

During the meeting, Sarma and his team discussed various initiatives aimed at honoring Hazarika’s vast contributions to Indian music and culture. They reviewed progress on cultural events, publications, and outreach activities across Assam and other key locations, including Arunachal Pradesh and major cities like Kolkata and Mumbai. The goal is to engage youth and cultural organizations to spread Hazarika’s timeless messages of unity and peace.

As part of this celebration, the Indian government has approved a Rs 100 Silver Commemorative Coin to honor Hazarika, a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy.

Sarma also highlighted collaborations with the Cultural Affairs Department and expressed gratitude to Arunachal Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein for his support in organizing celebrations at Roing. Additionally, plans include laying the foundation stone for a museum dedicated to Hazarika, ensuring his life and works are preserved for future generations.

Interestingly, Dr. Hazarika’s influence continues to resonate today. A recent survey revealed that over 65% of young people in Assam feel connected to his music, seeing it as a source of inspiration and cultural identity.
