Democratic candidate Shenna Bellows recently shared her health care plan, aiming to boost funding for Maine hospitals, birthing centers, and community health centers. She highlighted a pressing issue: hospitals aren’t getting enough financial support to deliver essential services.
“It doesn’t matter if two or 200 people show up at the ER,” Bellows noted. “The lights still need to stay on, and medical staff must be on call.”
If elected governor, Bellows plans to introduce this funding in her first budget proposal. While she hasn’t specified the exact costs, she suggested that the money could come from state budget efficiencies and taxes on out-of-state buyers purchasing second homes in Maine.
In addition to the funding, Bellows wants to support a public-private initiative to eliminate medical debt for Mainers earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level.
On another significant topic, she emphasized the importance of adding abortion rights to Maine’s Constitution. This proposal has faced hurdles in the state legislature before, but Bellows believes it’s crucial.
“Politics can shift, but a woman’s right to access abortion and contraception should be protected for future generations,” she explained.
Recent surveys show that many voters prioritize health care and reproductive rights in political discussions. For instance, a Pew Research study stated that nearly 59% of Americans support legal access to abortion.
By focusing on these pressing issues, Bellows aims to address the needs of Mainers, especially as health care and reproductive rights continue to be hot topics nationwide.
