Born Jack Hoggan on November 17, 1951, in Fife, Scotland, Vettriano was a self-taught painter whose works gained worldwide recognition. One of his most notable pieces, “The Singing Butler,” shows a couple elegantly dancing on a stormy beach while a butler and maid hold umbrellas. This painting became immensely popular in Britain after its release in 1992.

In a twist, in 2005, the renowned street artist Banksy created a parody called “Crude Oil (Vettriano)”, which satirized Vettriano’s iconic work. Banksy added elements like a sinking oil tanker to make an environmental statement.

Vettriano had a unique start in art. He left school at 15 to work as a mining engineer but discovered his passion for painting when a girlfriend gifted him watercolors for his 21st birthday. His big break came in 1998 when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual show, both of which sold on the first day.

Despite facing criticism from some art critics, Vettriano thrived commercially and exhibited in places like London, Hong Kong, and New York. His art attracted fans, including actor Jack Nicholson and lyricist Tim Rice.

His publicist reflected on his legacy, stating, “Jack Vettriano’s passing marks the end of an era for contemporary Scottish art. His evocative and timeless works will continue to inspire future generations.” Vettriano’s ability to capture the beauty of life in his paintings has left an enduring mark on the art world.
