Boston Weekend Weather: Brace for Record-Breaking Cold and Snow Accumulation—What to Expect!

Boston is gearing up for a cold and snowy weekend. The WBZ Weather Team has issued alerts for Saturday and Sunday, with forecasts showing increased snowfall across Massachusetts.

The National Weather Service has put winter weather advisories in place for central and eastern Massachusetts, especially in Essex County.

The storm this Saturday isn’t typical. It’s fueled by an “inverted trough,” which brings winds together and creates localized heavier snowfall. The challenge lies in predicting exactly where these snow bands will form.

Central Massachusetts is expected to see an earlier burst of snow, while coastal areas, particularly Essex County and Cape Ann, may receive the most significant accumulations later on.

Snow is set to begin before dawn on Saturday. Initially, a heavy band will move west to east from the Berkshires into Worcester County. Another band will develop along the Maine and New Hampshire coastlines. By Saturday morning, the snow in central Massachusetts is expected to weaken, and the focus will shift to eastern Massachusetts, including coastal areas.

Snowfall is predicted to be heaviest in northeast Massachusetts, particularly later in the afternoon. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate after midnight, with the worst conditions between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Plan accordingly.

As for snowfall amounts, areas in Worcester County and along the coastline could receive 3-5 inches. In some areas, particularly from the New Hampshire coastline to Cape Ann and the North Shore, 5-8 inches might be possible.

Post-storm, the cold will follow. The National Weather Service warns of extreme cold across Worcester County, with wind chills potentially reaching -30 degrees. Eastern Massachusetts may see wind chills as low as -20 degrees on Sunday, with northwest winds gusting between 20-40 mph. Sunday will be brutally cold, with high temperatures only in the teens, nearing record lows.

For sports fans, there’s a stark temperature contrast as the New England Patriots face off in Santa Clara, where the temperature will be around 65 degrees—almost 50 degrees warmer than Boston. With wind chill considered, that swing could feel like a 70-degree difference.
