New Line and Nocturna’s They Will Kill You raked in $1 million during its preview screenings. This figure is just shy of the $1.2 million earned by Ready or Not 2: Here I Come last Thursday, which went on to earn $9 million in its opening weekend.
This horror flick, co-financed by Skydance and featuring Zazie Beetz, is part of a $20 million production. There’s excitement building around its potential opening weekend performance.
Social media buzz is also noteworthy. They Will Kill You debuted at SXSW on March 17 and has generated a social media reach of approximately 183 million, up 18% compared to similar horror films. In contrast, Ready or Not 2 had an impressive reach of 294 million before its launch. Notable stars involved include Tom Felton, who has 26.7 million followers, and Patricia Arquette with 1.1 million.
Critically, They Will Kill You holds a 72% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, slightly lower than Ready or Not 2, which stands at 75%.
Meanwhile, Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary has seen strong performance, amassing $109.7 million across 4,007 theaters in its first week. It started with a $6.1 million Thursday, a slight dip from Wednesday. Sources suggest that its second week could mirror the success of Dune: Part Two, which saw a 44% drop but still earned around $45 million.
Spring break is still in effect, which is beneficial for box office numbers, with 16% of K-12 schools and 12% of colleges still on break according to Comscore.
In the wider box office scene, here’s how the latest films stack up:
- Hoppers (Disney) – $23.9 million in its third week.
- Dhurandhar The Revenge – $14.1 million in its opening week.
- Ready or Not 2: Here I Come – $12.2 million in its debut week.
- Reminders of Him – $11.2 million in its second week.
Stay tuned for more updates as the box office race continues.
