The world of soccer has recently been shaken by reports that Weston McKennie, a midfielder from the United States, is under investigation for illegal online betting in Italy. This inquiry, led by Milan prosecutors, stems from evidence linked to Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Fagioli, both of whom faced severe consequences last year for their involvement in gambling.

Fagioli, who currently plays on loan at Fiorentina, was handed a seven-month ban for admitting to betting on matches. Tonali, playing for Newcastle now, received a longer suspension of ten months after it was revealed that he also bet on games involving his own team, AC Milan. Both players accepted plea deals that required them to undergo treatment for gambling addiction.
Along with McKennie and Fagioli, the investigation has included nine other players, including Junior Firpo from Leeds. While there is no proof that the others ever gambled on soccer, their names appeared in the context of the investigation due to statements from Tonali and Fagioli and examination of electronic records.
These players are being scrutinized for using unauthorized online betting sites and platforms for activities such as poker. However, the penalties they face are not as severe; instead of bans, they may be fined up to 250 euros (around $284).
Notably, Fagioli has claimed that he encouraged teammate Nicolò Zaniolo to visit illegal betting sites for online poker and roulette, implying that he would receive benefits for bringing in new players. A message found on his phone referred to Zaniolo, indicating a potential recruitment strategy for illegal betting.
This situation reflects a growing concern within sports about gambling integrity and athlete behavior. The National Council on Problem Gambling reports that over 2 million Americans meet the criteria for gambling addiction, highlighting the need for more awareness and resources for those affected, especially athletes.
As ongoing investigations unfold, the challenges of managing gambling in sports will continue to be in the spotlight. The complexities of this issue remind us how vital it is for athletes to be informed and supported as they navigate their careers.
