On February 17, 2025, BYD Energy Storage and the Saudi Electricity Company made a significant move by signing contracts for the largest grid-scale energy storage projects in the world. Together, they plan to install a massive 12.5GWh system, adding to the already delivered 2.6GWh project. That brings their total collaboration to an impressive 15.1GWh.
The Project Kick-off Meeting
This partnership marks a key step for Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy ambitions, aligning with the Vision 2030 goals. The Saudi Electricity Company is dedicated to transforming the energy sector, aiming for a balanced energy mix with 50% coming from renewables by 2030. This project will help address global climate challenges and support the country’s energy transition.
The battery energy storage system (BESS) will be installed at five sites across Saudi Arabia. BYD will supply the advanced MC Cube-T ESS, which features cutting-edge technology known for its high efficiency. These installations will enhance the country’s power network, ensuring a stable energy supply and meeting peak demands as more renewable sources are integrated.
BYD’s journey in battery energy storage began 17 years ago with its first pilot project. Since then, the company has delivered over 75GWh of equipment for 350 projects in over 110 countries. Their wide range of products supports various needs in energy generation, utility management, and consumption, showcasing their comprehensive capability in the energy storage market.
This groundbreaking project is set to elevate the significance of electrochemical energy storage globally. With this collaboration as a fresh starting point, BYD Energy Storage plans to boost its investment in technology and work with partners worldwide.
