Community Heroes: Local Volunteers and Organizations Team Up to Deliver Food Aid to WNC Residents

Local groups are coming together to tackle food insecurity in Western North Carolina, an issue made worse by Hurricane Helene.

On September 25, volunteers filled boxes with fresh produce, meat, and pantry staples for families in need. People lined up in their cars at the WNC Ag Center, waiting to receive the food.

“People are really struggling,” shared Susan Grant, a local resident in line. Another local, Jerry Rice, noted the challenges he’s facing post-hurricane, mentioning damage to his home.

Brad Wirth, who traveled from Hickory to help with the distribution, expressed how rewarding it is to give back. “It’s fulfilling to help those in need,” he said. The food distribution was organized by Food Lion Feeds, MANNA FoodBank, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

Kay Carter, CEO of Second Harvest, emphasized the importance of community support during tough times. “Keep people encouraged,” she said.

Micah Chrisman from MANNA FoodBank pointed out that food insecurity was already a significant problem in the area, and the hurricane has intensified it. “Many communities lost their only grocery store and are facing increased economic hardships,” he explained.

According to a recent report by Feeding America, food insecurity affects around 10% of households in North Carolina, a statistic that highlights the urgent need for support.
