Nagpur: On March 4, World Obesity Day, doctors expressed their worries about the growing obesity crisis, calling it a serious public health issue. This problem is hitting both children and adults hard. They highlighted the rising cases of obesity, especially among women, and pointed out its links to diabetes and mental health problems. It’s clear we need to make lifestyle changes and raise awareness about this issue.

Dr. Vasant Khalatkar, head of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, noted a troubling rise in childhood obesity. He described it as a “rising demon.” He explained that many kids are facing health problems like diabetes and hypertension at younger ages. Parents should help by encouraging outdoor activities and ensuring their children eat healthy foods.

Dr. Jayesh Timane, a specialist in internal medicine, shared that about 41% of adults and 20% of children in India are overweight or obese. This trend is likely to continue rising. He believes that processed foods, a lack of exercise, and remote work are major contributors to obesity. “Obesity can lead to serious diseases like diabetes and heart disease. If we don’t act now, our healthcare system will be overwhelmed,” he cautioned.

Dr. Timane also emphasized the importance of self-monitoring. Keeping track of Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist size helps people understand their health risks. A BMI over 25 means someone is overweight, and over 30 is considered obese. A waist circumference above 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women also indicates higher health risks.

Dr. Prashant Nikhade highlighted the specific dangers of obesity for women, especially during pregnancy. Extra weight can affect both the mother’s health and the future health of the child.

Dr. Sunil Gupta, a diabetologist, warned about the rise of diabetes in rural Vidarbha, connecting it directly to poor lifestyle choices. He explained that obesity often leads to insulin resistance, making blood sugar levels spike. Without change, this cycle of obesity and diabetes will only get worse.

Dr. Manjusha Giri, president of the IMA Nagpur, emphasized that tackling obesity is not just a personal issue but a community effort. Public health campaigns, fitness programs, and nutrition education in schools and workplaces are essential to fighting this epidemic.

Effective Lifestyle Changes to Prevent Obesity

  • Regular exercise: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week and include strength training.
  • Healthy diet: Focus on whole foods, fiber-rich meals, and cut down on sugar and processed foods.
  • Traditional practices: Incorporate yoga and meditation for both physical and emotional health.
  • Early medical consultation: Seek help if you notice unexplained weight gain, fatigue, joint pain, or other concerning symptoms.
