Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has set up a new committee focused on circular economy and climate change. This move aims to boost environmental sustainability and resilience in the state.

On Friday, Environment Commissioner Dr. Tob Loko announced the governor’s decision. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to creating a sustainable future that is also economically vibrant.

The committee’s main task is to develop a comprehensive policy framework. This framework will guide the state’s shift towards a circular economy, which emphasizes minimizing waste and maximizing resource use. They will also create a climate change roadmap that aligns with Nigeria’s national commitments, the Paris Agreement, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Loko noted that these initiatives will foster green innovation and investment while generating jobs across various sectors like agriculture, energy, waste management, and manufacturing. “Climate change and environmental issues pose risks, but they also offer unique opportunities for transformation and smart development,” he added.

The committee will be diverse, including experts from government, private sectors, academia, and civil organizations. Dr. Loko stressed the need for inclusive consulting during the policy formulation. “We’re reaching out to all stakeholders, from local communities to private sectors, to support this significant transition toward a circular and climate-resilient economy,” he said.

Recent studies show that transitioning to a circular economy can help retain up to $4.5 trillion in economic benefits globally by 2030. These benefits can significantly impact local economies, especially in resource-based regions like Ondo State.

Moreover, the concept of a circular economy goes hand in hand with climate goals. Countries implementing similar frameworks have reported not just environmental benefits, but also significant boosts in job creation and community resilience. For example, the European Union has launched initiatives that led to a decline in emissions while generating green jobs.
