The government is working on a guidebook to document the city’s centenarian trees. Supriya Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, shared this news via social media.
This initiative is part of the Green Tamil Nadu Mission. Its goal is to scientifically study trees that are over 100 years old. Ms. Sahu stated that the project involves several partners, including the National Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding and the Chennai Forest Division. They are already conducting field surveys.
Shobha Menon, the Founder-Trustee of the Nizhal Trust, mentioned that her team has found 110 old and rare trees in Chennai. While some may not be over a century old, they are still significant. She stressed the importance of protecting these trees to prevent any damage.
In a related study conducted in July 2024, researchers O.M. Murali and S. Rajarajan pointed out the lack of proper care for avenue trees in Chennai. Their study showed only a slight increase in tree numbers on certain roads, from 317 in 2004 to 327 in 2024.
Experts see the value of preserving these old trees. Dr. Rajarajan stated, “Trees are crucial to our ecosystem. Their age means they have a vital role in maintaining the local environment.” This sentiment resonates with many, as social media trends show a growing awareness and appreciation for nature conservation.
