Discover the Essence of India: Connect, Celebrate, and Experience Authentic Culture

Before discussing the title of “eternal protector” of India’s rich culture, it’s important to define what we mean by “Indian culture.” One of the most insightful definitions comes from Rabindranath Tagore in his poem, “Bharat Tirtha.” He writes, “Here everybody will bring into union and exchange gifts. Nobody will go empty-handed from the seashore where great souls come together to pay reverence.”

Tagore captures the essence of India, where diverse groups—whether Aryans or Dravidians, Hindus or Muslims—come together. He celebrated the blending of many cultures, including the contributions of Chinese, Sakas, Hunas, Pathans, and Mughals, emphasizing unity and respect. This spirit of diversity is also enshrined in the Constitution of India, which promotes equal rights and the freedom to express one’s unique culture.

The question then arises: Can organizations like the RSS openly embrace this spirit of diversity? Are they willing to acknowledge the importance of all languages, religions, and cultures, including English? Are they prepared to denounce acts like the demolition of the Babri Masjid, which reflects a disregard for parts of India’s shared history?

If they do not support this inclusive vision, they risk being viewed as confined to a narrow perspective that doesn’t truly represent the breadth of Indian culture.

India’s identity is deeply rooted in its diversity. As Tagore eloquently states in another poem, the spirit of love and unity across different communities is vital to our national identity. The rigid mindset that equates India solely with Hindi and Hindu ideals is outdated and must change.

This conversation about culture is more relevant today than ever. As India navigates its place in a rapidly changing world, embracing our collective heritage—rather than dividing it—can foster understanding and acceptance.
