The desktop email client Thunderbird is now rolling out updates every month, benefitting new users with exciting features sooner—just look at the latest release, Thunderbird 136.0!
This update brings a handy dark mode for messages. No more blinding white screens in dim light! There’s an easy toggle in the header to switch to dark mode whenever you want.
Another great addition is the new Appearance setting, which controls message threading and sorting. Now you can easily keep new messages at the bottom across all your folders.
There are also some important fixes. For example, addresses clicked in the header now display correctly on HiDPI screens. Plus, any changes made to font sizes apply to all parts of the app, fixing issues in a few dialogs.
Other changes and improvements include:
- Updated criteria for closing idle message databases
- Fixed threading issues with unified folders
- Correct release channel shown in the “About Thunderbird” dialog
- Resolved issues with deleting or detaching attachments in saved
.emlfiles - Various fixes for Unified folders
- IMAP new mail notifications now function properly
- Sending emails to multiple SMTP servers no longer fails silently
- “Save Link As” for RSS feed content is now functional

This release also includes important security patches to address new vulnerabilities. Many of these updates will also benefit Thunderbird ESR users.
If you’re using the Thunderbird snap in Ubuntu, it will stay on the ESR channel. To get the latest release, you can switch to the beta channel in the App Center, where version 136 is available now.
