LONDON, June 3 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently met with UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed. The focus was on strengthening cooperation between Malaysia and the UK.
Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the Minister for Rural and Regional Development, discussed several important topics. These included disaster management, clean water initiatives, and the adoption of new technologies to better prepare Malaysia for climate change challenges.
He pointed out that rising global temperatures directly affect people’s lives. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle issues brought on by climate change. “While the UK has made strides in managing river pollution, this remains an ongoing challenge for us. We need to raise public awareness,” he noted after a dinner with Malaysian students studying in the UK.
There were other attendees, including Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and a group of 60 Mara-sponsored students. Discussions not only centered on environmental issues but also covered the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program and the global halal industry.
"I believe our discussions can lead to a more strategic partnership, focusing on a sustainable and inclusive future," Ahmad Zahid said.
Moreover, he highlighted the importance of fostering a sense of belonging among students studying abroad. He encouraged them to remain connected with Malaysia and contribute to its development, even though they may find higher salaries in the UK.
Recent statistics show that Malaysia is increasingly affected by climate-related challenges. A survey from the Malaysian government found that over 70% of the population is concerned about water pollution and its effects on health. Experts argue that investment in clean technologies and public education are critical for addressing these urgent issues.
Ahmad Zahid’s visit to the UK emphasizes the opportunity for Malaysia to learn from the UK’s advancements. This partnership can pave the way for not only environmental improvements but also economic benefits, aligning with global sustainability goals.
