PRINCETON, W. Va. – McDowell County is still recovering from February’s terrible flood. People from nearby areas and beyond are stepping up to help. One of the most inspiring supporters is a young student named Colton Bailey.
Colton, a 14-year-old from Glenwood School, found his calling after jokingly adding his name to campaign signs during the last election. This small act sparked a realization: he didn’t need to be in politics to make a real impact. So, he launched his own initiative called “Colton Bailey Says Hi,” focusing on supporting his community during this tough time.
“The flood broke my heart. I just knew I needed to help,” Colton shared. His enthusiasm for public service shines through his actions, as he works to make a positive difference.
Colton teamed up with Jimmies Restaurant in Princeton to organize a food drive, collecting nonperishable items for those affected by the flood. Donors also get a chance to enter a drawing for a $25 gift card to the restaurant. Jamie Hall, the restaurant’s owner, has been supportive, noting how crucial these donations are for McDowell County residents.
“The need is real, whether someone had a little water in their basement or lost their entire home,” Hall said. “Any support is greatly appreciated.”
Despite being early in the drive, they’ve already seen generous donations from the community. Jamie praised Colton’s efforts, recognizing his commitment to helping others.
Colton believes that young people can make a difference, despite the common misconception that they cannot. “People are surprised that I’ve taken this initiative,” he remarked. “But we can do a lot if given the chance.”
He expressed gratitude to Jimmies Restaurant for their collaboration and urged everyone who can to join in helping those in need.
The food drive will run until this Saturday, March 15th. Jimmies Restaurant is closed on Mondays, but you can drop off donations anytime you see someone inside.
