Your Excellency, Dr. Elias Warrak, President of the University of Balamand,

Esteemed Members of the Board of Trustees, Faculty, Staff, Graduates, Families, and Guests,

It’s a true pleasure to be back in Lebanon with you today.

This day is filled with joy and hope. To the Class of 2025, congratulations! You’ve earned this moment through hard work and perseverance. You’ve faced challenges, questioned the status quo, and dared to dream. You are not just graduates; you represent the change our world needs.

As I speak, I think about what this moment means for you and for Lebanon. This country may be small, but its spirit is immense. Lebanon has been a crossroads of civilizations, a place where cultures and faiths meet. Its history is rich with struggles and victories, yet one truth stands out: its people are incredibly resilient.

Lebanon has weathered many storms. It has suffered but never given up. Even in tough times, hope remains, and that hope brings us together today. The University of Balamand embodies this spirit—rooted in tradition but dedicated to progress.

It promotes dialogue over division and learning over ignorance. These are values the world needs now more than ever. As someone in a role with the United Nations, I’ve seen these principles in action worldwide, but here in Lebanon, they resonate deeply.

Currently, Lebanon is at the brink of a new political chapter. President Joseph Aoun stated in his address on January 9, 2025, that a new phase in Lebanon’s history is beginning. This isn’t just a statement; it’s an invitation to act. We all must work toward renewing our beloved country.

Political change requires civic courage, and that’s where you come in. You have the potential to reshape the future, brick by brick, law by law, and idea by idea. Your generation can build unity in a world too often divided by fear.

As you step into your futures, remember the power you hold. Your education is not only a privilege but also a responsibility. You can be the ones who build bridges, speak out against injustice, and maintain hope even in despair.

Let me end with a quote from Khalil Gibran, a beloved figure from Lebanon: “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls.” As you move forward, remember to be strong, humble, and courageous. Remember, your story and Lebanon’s story are still being written—starting today.
