Empowering Journalists: ACReSAL’s Training Program Boosts Climate and Environmental Reporting for 100 Participants in Gombe

The Gombe State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project recently hosted a workshop to enhance climate and environmental reporting. One hundred journalists participated in this one-day event held at the Gombe International Hotel, which aimed to provide them with the practical skills needed to cover important topics like climate resilience and land restoration.

Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, the ACReSAL Project Coordinator, highlighted the vital role journalists play in Nigeria’s climate adaptation efforts. He stated, “When journalists report accurately, they help communities grasp the importance of climate resilience.” This effort supports not just awareness but also accountability in environmental matters.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya was commended for fostering a supportive environment for media work. Dr. Jauro announced plans for a State Environmental Journalism Award to honor outstanding reporting that emphasizes sustainability.

Mr. Richard James, representing the Commissioner for Information, described the training as both “visionary and timely.” He emphasized that effective environmental communication is essential to raise public awareness about sustainable development. “When journalists comprehend the science behind climate issues, they can catalyze change,” he noted.

Comrade Faruk Muazu, chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Gombe, praised the collaboration with ACReSAL. He argued that this partnership effectively addresses the knowledge gap in environmental journalism, equipping reporters to produce informed stories that elevate climate resilience.

Mrs. Adaline Waye, State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), urged journalists to weave environmental education into their reports. This approach will help enlighten the public and strengthen national climate goals.

Participants expressed their gratitude for the training, promising to focus more on climate issues and local adaptation projects.

The ACReSAL project, backed by the World Bank and the Federal Government, aims to combat land degradation and support sustainable farming in Nigeria’s semi-arid regions. According to recent findings from organizations like the World Bank, the involvement of trained journalists is crucial. Their work can raise awareness and support climate-smart approaches in local communities.
