Two high school seniors from LaPorte County have received scholarships to support their dreams of working in healthcare. Caloe Peretti, 17, from Tri-Township High School, and Naomi Williams, 18, from Michigan City High School, are the 2025 recipients of the Franciscan Health Michigan City Medical Staff Memorial Scholarships.
Naomi will study biology at the University of Indianapolis, aiming to become an emergency medical technician. “I’ve always wanted to do it,” she shared. “My family is in the medical field, and helping people sounds fun.”
Caloe plans to attend St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame to study nursing. “I’ve always felt a passion for helping others,” she said. “This job lets you make a real impact.”
The scholarships were created in 2021 by the medical staff at Franciscan Health Michigan City to honor physicians who served the area. They are funded by local doctors in partnership with the Franciscan Health Foundation. The funds can be shared among different recipients as needed.
Dr. Matthew Troy, a general surgeon at Franciscan Health Michigan City, chairs the Scholarship Committee. He noted the committee’s goal is to inspire local students interested in healthcare, especially those who are the first in their families to attend college. “We’re always impressed by their applications,” he said. “One past recipient now works in the ER.”
According to recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of first-generation college students is rising. This trend highlights the importance of scholarships like these, which support students with financial needs. Given the shortage of healthcare workers, attracting young talent to the field is crucial. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that healthcare jobs will grow by 16% over the next decade, much faster than the average for all professions.
Community support for initiatives like these not only helps students but also strengthens the local healthcare system. As more students like Naomi and Caloe pursue careers in this field, they will bring fresh energy and perspectives that can improve care and service in the community.
