Empowering Solutions: How the Socialist Project Tackles Today’s Crisis

The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is excited to host Ståle Holgersen in Toronto for the unveiling of his new book, Against the Crisis: Economy and Ecology in a Burning World.

We live in a time marked by economic and ecological crises. These issues are not just random events but are built into the fabric of our current system. It’s easy to think of these crises as chances for change, but they often reinforce the status quo rather than challenge it. Holgersen argues for an ecosocialist approach that breaks this cycle. He believes it’s our responsibility to create a new path, especially in light of the climate crisis.

Research shows that the ongoing climate emergency demands immediate and radical action. A recent survey highlighted that 70% of young people feel anxious about climate change and its impacts on their future. This growing concern can serve as a catalyst for change, as more people seek alternatives to the current economic model that prioritizes profit over the planet.

Holgersen, a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Stockholm University, is not new to this conversation. As part of research groups like the Zetkin Collective, he explores how different ideologies intersect with environmental issues. His work, including the publication of White Skin, Black Fuel, sheds light on the complexities of political ecology.

The Leo Panitch School, established in 2023 by members of the Socialist Project, is dedicated to political education. We’re proud to collaborate with the Trade Unions and Labour Environmentalism Study Network (TULE) and the Centre for Social Justice for this event. Together, we aim to engage participants in discussions about the challenges and possibilities of ecosocialism in today’s world.

Holgersen’s insights remind us that while capitalism creates crises, there is a way out. It’s time to think critically and act boldly.
