European Parliament Advocates for Bold and Ambitious EU Climate Policies

The European Union (EU) is pushing to stay at the forefront of global climate talks as it heads into the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference, COP30. This message comes from a recent resolution by the European Parliament, which emphasizes that all nations should contribute fairly to climate funding.

During the discussion, members highlighted the importance of maintaining ambitious climate goals while ensuring that these initiatives also support the economy and social equity. They urged EU leaders to finalize the climate pledge for 2035 promptly. It was noted with concern that the EU missed the deadline to submit its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.

Looking further ahead, Parliament members stressed the necessity of establishing a science-based climate target for 2040, in line with the European Climate Law. There is a strong call to end the EU’s reliance on fossil fuels and to speed up its transition to renewable energy. They believe it’s crucial for the EU to set a firm deadline for phasing out fossil fuel subsidies.

Climate change poses significant challenges, including resource scarcity and food shortages. These issues can lead to rising tensions and conflicts. The Parliament members highlighted the environmental degradation occurring in conflict-affected regions like Ukraine and Gaza, calling for more attention to the climate implications of these situations.

Furthermore, they believe all sectors, including defense, must contribute to emission reductions and work toward decarbonization. The resolution stresses the need for a collective global response to reduce emissions across diverse industries—like agriculture, textiles, and transportation.

As COP30 approaches, set for November 10-21 in Belem, Brazil, major discussions will focus on strategies to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, along with evaluating financial commitments made at the last conference.

In recent surveys, a significant portion of the public supports aggressive climate action, reflecting a growing awareness of the urgency of this issue. As the EU prepares for the conference, people are watching closely to see how their leaders will navigate these pressing challenges.
