This year, Vernon’s Polson Park will be buzzing with activity for Canada Day on July 1. The Vernon-Okanagan Inspired Community Events (VOICE) Society is gearing up for a memorable celebration, highlighting community fun and creativity.
Mayla Janzen from VOICE recently presented plans to the city council. While a dazzling drone show was hoped for, budget constraints have put it on hold. Last year’s show faced challenges, and this time, the estimated cost of $38,000 was simply too high.
But there’s still plenty to enjoy! The event will feature a community art wall organized by the Arts Council of the North Okanagan, an exciting animatronic dinosaur, a story walk from Outreach Literacy, and a mini car show. Local groups are invited to join in, fostering community interaction and support.
“We welcome other local organizations to participate for free and engage with attendees,” Janzen said. “We’re ready to work with them to make it happen.” Interested groups can find more information at voicesociety.org.
In a move toward sustainability, fireworks will not be part of the festivities this year. Experts emphasize that fireworks can contribute to air pollution, and many communities are shifting towards more eco-friendly options. As cities around the world grapple with climate change, this decision aligns with the growing trend of prioritizing the environment in public events.
The VOICE Society is also seeking support from the city. They have requested tables, chairs, restrooms, and necessary permits to ensure a smooth experience for everyone. The council will review these requests in an upcoming meeting.
While previous celebrations featured fireworks, this year’s focus on creativity and community spirit offers a refreshing take. Rather than relying on traditional displays, these events aim to highlight local talent and foster connections among residents. As the event develops, it reflects a shift towards inclusivity and environmentally friendly practices, paving the way for future celebrations.
