BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The University of Evansville softball team bounced back after a tough loss on Saturday. They defeated Tennessee Tech, 9-6, in their second game of the day.
Game 1 – Western Kentucky 5, UE 4
The first game was intense. After three quiet innings, Evansville scored first. Jess Willsey and Taylor Howe hit consecutive doubles, bringing in the first run. But Western Kentucky quickly responded, scoring three runs in the bottom of that inning.
Eliza Piggott helped claw back for UE in the fifth inning. After Jenna Donohoo walked, Piggott smacked a 2-run homer, leveling the game. Kynadee Warner followed with an RBI double in the sixth, putting the Aces ahead, 4-3.
However, WKU tied it again later, and in the seventh, after a fierce effort by UE, the Hilltoppers found a way to win with a crucial error that allowed the winning run to score. Kate Ridgway had a strong game, pitching six innings and not giving up any earned runs, while striking out four batters.
Game 2 – UE 9, Tennessee Tech 6
In the second game, the Aces took an early lead with a 2-run homer from Jess Willsey in the first inning. Brooke Voss also scored on that play. They extended their lead in the second inning when Kynadee Warner walked and later scored on Piggott’s single. Voss contributed with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 4-0.
Tennessee Tech fought back, scoring three runs in the second to close the gap to 4-3. Later, Piggott added another two runs with a single, making it 6-3 for UE. Despite a strong comeback by the Golden Eagles in the sixth, who tied the game, the Aces were not done yet.
In the seventh, a 2-out rally led to three more runs for Evansville. Morgan Adams had an RBI single, followed by Callie Meinel’s 2-run single, giving the Aces some much-needed cushion. Elle Jarrett closed the game, pitching the final three innings and allowing two unearned runs. Gracie Hollingsworth started, giving up four runs, two of which were earned.
The Aces finished with nine runs on ten hits, with Donohoo and Piggott each contributing two hits. Piggott led with three RBIs.
