Lego is taking playtime to a whole new level with its latest innovation: smart bricks. These new pieces not only connect like regular Legos but also make sounds and light up. Imagine building Luke Skywalker’s X-wing fighter and hearing the iconic “woosh” as you swoop your creation through the air. It’s a fresh way to mix creativity with technology, all without screens.
The smart bricks look familiar; they are shaped like the traditional two-by-four Lego block. Powered by a tiny chip, these bricks react to how you play. Install one in Darth Vader’s TIE fighter, and it will engage in a virtual dogfight with sound effects. If one ship gets “hit,” the other responds with sound, bringing your building scene to life. You might even hear “The Imperial March” during intense moments, adding to the excitement.
However, these high-tech bricks come with a higher price tag. Luke’s X-wing costs £79.99, while Vader’s ship is £59.99. Some toy experts worry that this tech could dampen the imaginative play that Lego has always encouraged. After all, a classic part of play was making your own sound effects, like “swoosh” or “pew-pew.”
Users have mixed reactions. On social media, one Reddit user expressed disappointment, saying they could make the sounds themselves. Lego, which has been around for 70 years, launched this new technology at the CES consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. As children increasingly gravitate towards screen-based games—Roblox alone has about 150 million daily users—Lego aims to keep traditional play engaging. Tom Donaldson, a senior vice president at the Lego Group, said, “This new smart brick system combines creativity, technology, and storytelling to enhance the building experience.”
