Exploring the UK Government's Top Priorities for Preserving Britain's Natural Environment

Biodiversity and restoring ecosystems are hot topics in Britain right now. At a recent event hosted by UCL’s Department of Political Science and the UCL Policy Lab, experts discussed how the Labour party can best allocate resources to these causes.

The event took place in December and was led by Dr. Fergus Green, a political theory and public policy expert from UCL. He was joined by notable speakers, including Guy Shrubsole. Shrubsole is an influential environmental activist and the author of Lie of the Land: Who Really Cares for the Countryside. His experience includes working with Rewilding Britain, Friends of the Earth, and various governmental bodies in the UK and New Zealand.

Another speaker, Baroness Young of Old Scone, has a rich history in environmental advocacy. She has held significant roles such as Chief Executive of the RSPB and Chair of the Environment Agency, focusing on local environmental issues.

Mark Walton, Director of Shared Assets, completed the panel. His company collaborates with communities and landowners to support a fair land system. The discussion also touched on the recent budget from Downing Street, its effects on landowners, and how economic policies intersect with environmental stewardship.
