One of the biggest platforms for Nintendo Switch piracy has been shut down recently due to an FBI investigation. Nsw2u was well-known for providing downloadable ROMs, allowing users to play games on hacked Switch consoles or PC emulators.
When you try to access the site now, you’ll see a notice about its seizure. This action follows a warrant from a U.S. court in Georgia. Interestingly, the notice also features a logo from the Netherlands’ Fiscal Information and Investigation Service, which handles financial crime investigations.
Nintendo has been serious about fighting game piracy for years. In 2019, they targeted RomUniverse, a site that let users download an unlimited number of old and new Nintendo games for a fee. Just last year, Nintendo took action against a streamer named EveryGameGuru for showcasing pirated and unreleased Switch games and sharing illegal ROMs. Notably, the creators of the popular Switch emulator Yuzu recently paid $2.4 million to settle charges from Nintendo.
Recently, Nintendo added a new clause in its updated user agreement that could lead to “bricking” a Switch if it’s found running illegal emulators or pirated games. This change took effect right before the launch of their latest gaming system in June.
The crackdown on piracy is not just about protecting revenue; it’s also about maintaining the brand’s integrity. According to a study by the Intellectual Property Alliance, piracy costs the gaming industry billions each year. The 2022 report notes that more than 80% of gamers are aware of piracy yet only a small fraction view it as a serious issue.
