The Kansas Track & Field team is gearing up for the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, on February 6. The meet kicks off at 11 a.m. CT.
Recently, the team stood out at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational. They achieved two new school records, won four events, and earned 21 podium finishes. John Swabik made waves by setting the men’s heptathlon record in his debut, while Aaliyah Moore broke the 1,000-meter run record. Mason Meinershagen shined, winning the World Athletics Bronze Tour pole vault invite against fierce competition.
Head coach Stanley Redwine emphasized the need to stay focused. “We did well last time, showing significant improvement. But we can’t get comfortable. This team has immense talent, and we need to keep pushing,” he said.
In recent rankings by the USTFCCCA, the Kansas men’s team jumped 14 spots to 22nd in the nation, while the women’s team is placed at 60th.
The day’s events will kick off with the men’s pole vault and weight throw. Field events include both men’s and women’s shot put, as well as high jump, starting at 2 p.m. The track events will begin at noon with the men’s 3,000-meter run, followed by sprints and hurdles throughout the afternoon.
Notably, track and field participation has surged over the years. According to a report by the National Federation of State High School Associations, the number of high school athletes competing has increased by over 25% since 2000, highlighting the sport’s growing popularity.
