In a historic achievement for India’s defense manufacturing, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) delivered three naval vessels to the Indian Navy in one day. This milestone includes the INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray, showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in shipbuilding.
With this delivery, GRSE has now built a total of 118 warships, including 80 for the Indian Navy. This reinforces GRSE’s position as one of India’s leading shipyards.
The vessels were accepted by senior Navy officials like Rear Admiral Gautam Marwah and Commodore Shishir Dixit, marking a significant moment for the Navy’s operational capabilities.
INS Dunagiri is the second stealth frigate under Project 17A. Here are some key details:
- Length: 149 meters
- Displacement: 6,670 tonnes
- Armed with BrahMos missiles and advanced radar systems
- Capable of multi-domain warfare
- Features a diesel and gas turbine power system
INS Sanshodhak is a survey vessel that enhances the Navy’s hydrographic and oceanographic capabilities. Its highlights include:
- Length: 110 meters
- Designed for coastal and deep-water surveys
- Supports helicopter operations and disaster relief
- Equipped with advanced survey equipment
- Has thrusters for precise movement
INS Agray is designed for anti-submarine warfare. Here are its vital features:
- Length: approximately 77.6 meters
- Equipped for sub-surface surveillance
- Armed with torpedoes and a 30 mm naval gun
- About 88% of the content is indigenous
- Uses waterjet propulsion for agility
The simultaneous delivery of these platforms highlights GRSE’s enhanced production capacity and ability to handle complex projects. This is a game-changer for India’s maritime defense, emphasizing the maturity of domestic shipbuilding. In fact, a recent report by the Ministry of Defence indicates a 25% increase in indigenous ship production capabilities over the last five years.
Looking ahead, GRSE has a strong order book. It’s working on:
- Another Project 17A stealth frigate
- Four Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Shallow Water Crafts
- Four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels
- 30 more vessels, including 13 for export
Additionally, the shipyard is in talks for five new corvettes, which will further enhance its portfolio. This vibrant growth reflects confidence in India’s defense sector and its future in global maritime strategy.
