Aaron Rodgers will be officially let go by the Jets at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Before that, he might find a new team.
One possibility is the Giants, but other teams are also interested in signing the 41-year-old quarterback, who has had a remarkable yet challenging career.
Since February 13, teams have been allowed to talk to Rodgers following the Jets’ announcement about parting ways with him. They can negotiate, but a contract can only be signed after the Jets officially release him.
However, it’s clear that the Giants don’t consider Rodgers their top option. Initially, they had their sights set on Matthew Stafford and even discussed extending his contract. There was a moment when they thought a trade with the Rams was possible, but Stafford chose to stay with his current team.
The Giants saw Stafford, 36, as a viable quarterback who could lead them for at least two more seasons. Acquiring him would have meant they wouldn’t need to pick a quarterback with the third overall pick in next month’s draft.
Now, they’re looking at Rodgers as more of a temporary solution. If they decide to bring him on board, they might still draft a young quarterback like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders. In this plan, Rodgers would start, and the rookie could learn from him, stepping in once ready.
There’s uncertainty about how much interest there is in Rodgers overall. One option could be the Vikings, who might want a seasoned starter to fill in while J.J. McCarthy recovers from knee surgeries that kept him out last season. They could also consider bringing back Daniel Jones, who was with their practice squad last year.
The Seahawks just traded Geno Smith, which leaves them searching for a quarterback. The Giants are exploring several options, including Russell Wilson and Sam Darnold, who saw a resurgence with the Vikings but is unlikely to stay there.
The Giants are coming off a tough 3-14 season, and general manager Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll know they need to improve in 2025. Their roster currently lists just Tommy DeVito at quarterback, making their search critical.
Last season, Rodgers threw 28 touchdown passes and racked up 3,897 yards. Even with those numbers, the Jets finished with a disappointing 5-12 record, struggling in close games.
Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner commented on the speculation of a Rodgers-Vikings connection, hinting that it could enhance Rodgers’ stats significantly.
The Giants are keenly aware of Rodgers’ past controversies and know he’s not without risk. However, every available option comes with its own set of flaws. Ultimately, they need to make a decision soon.
