Every summer and fall, baleen whales gather off California’s coast, ready to feast on krill and fish. This is an essential time for them to gain weight before heading south to breed in warmer waters. A recent study highlights how these magnificent creatures use songs to communicate about food supply, revealing interesting patterns in their behavior.

Researchers studied three whale species: humpback, blue, and fin whales. They wanted to see how different environmental factors influenced their singing habits. Using underwater microphones (hydrophones), scientists tracked whale songs over a vast area, while also accessing whale photos and prey data from NOAA Fisheries to further understand this relationship.

The study analyzed six years of data, uncovering a notable trend. For the first three years, whale life was challenging. A marine heat wave and toxic algal blooms devastated krill and fish populations, leading to quieter whales. In the next three years, however, krill rebounded, and whale songs became more frequent across all species. Interestingly, when krill numbers dropped again, blue whales fell silent, while humpbacks continued to sing due to a rise in fish populations.

John Ryan, the study’s lead author, suggested several reasons for the link between singing and food availability. One possibility is that whales conserve energy when food is scarce, choosing not to sing. Another theory is that song may serve as a signal for other whales about the location of abundant food. When blue whales encounter a large krill swarm, they produce specific calls that alert others, prompting a lively gathering.

Andy Rogan, a marine mammal biologist from Ocean Alliance, emphasized the study’s significance for whale conservation. He explained that establishing a connection between whale songs and prey distribution offers insights into the broader ecosystem. By simply detecting whale songs, scientists can infer patterns about prey availability and other environmental changes.

This research shines a light on how interconnected whale behavior is with their environment. As climate change and human activities increasingly affect marine ecosystems, understanding these connections becomes crucial for their conservation. Insights like these play a vital role in protecting both the whales and the ocean they inhabit.
