Limestone University’s Legacy Lives On Through Bernie the Mascot
When Limestone University announced its closure earlier this year, it left a sizable hole for many. Justin Rollins, owner of Hub City Gym and a proud alumnus, described the news as a heartbreaking loss. “It felt like a death,” he said.
For Rollins, a piece of that legacy was wrapped up in the university’s mascot, Bernie. The six-foot Saint Bernard mascot had been a staple at games and events, embodying school spirit. When the costume went up for auction, Rollins jumped at the chance to bring Bernie home to Hub City Gym. “Bernie represents tradition,” he shared. “I want to keep that alive for everyone.”
On December 9, he successfully bid for Bernie, as well as various gym equipment from the university. This included:
- Five cable stations
- A Jacob’s Ladder
- Multiple cardio machines
- Leg machines
- Heavy boxing bags
- A wood platform for deadlifts, featuring the engraved Limestone emblem
- A VO2 machine, a first for public use in Spartanburg
With the addition of Bernie and the equipment, Rollins has clear plans. “Bernie will be part of our marketing and events,” he explained. “He’ll be at kickball games, dodgeball, and community events. We want him to encourage and inspire our members just as he did for students at Limestone.”
Beyond his mascot excitement, Rollins has a rich background in fitness. With over 20 years of experience, he holds certifications from NASM and USATF. He trains 47 clients, with 97% of them staying with him long-term. His reputation for helping clients achieve their goals has made him a staple in the local fitness scene.
Interestingly, Rollins runs around 4,000 miles each year without injury. He’s also a three-time Boston Marathon runner, reflecting his dedication and expertise in physical fitness.
Rollins graduated from Limestone University with a degree in Business Administration. His journey exemplifies a blend of nostalgia and innovation, making sure that the spirit of Limestone continues to thrive in the Spartanburg community.
