BW LPG Limited has made an exciting move by signing a deal to sell two Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), the BW Pampero and BW Chinook, to its joint venture, BW LPG India. This addition will boost BW LPG India’s operational capacity, making it the owner of the country’s largest VLGC fleet, now totaling eight ships. The Pampero and Chinook were built in 2015, which aligns well with the increasing demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in India.

Kristian Sørensen, CEO of BW LPG, expressed optimism about the growth potential in India’s LPG market: “With BW Pampero and BW Chinook, we add modern quality tonnage and more capacity to our Indian-flagged fleet.” He also highlighted the importance of teamwork with their partners, Mass Capital and Global United Shipping, in sustaining fleet renewal.

Founded in 2017, BW LPG India is primarily owned by BW LPG (52%) and Maas Capital (42%). Their fleet operates under Indian flags, supporting the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative for self-reliance and playing a crucial role in around 20% of India’s LPG imports.

The company’s strategy reflects a broader vision to optimize its fleet while supporting India’s transition to cleaner energy. In fact, the LPG market has been growing rapidly in India, influenced by increasing domestic consumption and infrastructure improvements. Recent reports suggest that India’s LPG consumption is set to increase by 4-5% annually over the next few years, highlighting a growing reliance on this energy source.

Overall, BW LPG’s recent agreement signifies a strategic step in enhancing fleet capacity and supporting the ongoing energy transition in India, echoing a positive trend in the global push for cleaner energy solutions.
