Colombo: The Indian women’s cricket team recently paid heartfelt tribute to the victims of a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam. As a sign of respect, the players wore black armbands during their first match of the ODI triangular series in Sri Lanka.
This gesture mirrors what we saw in the Indian Premier League, where players also wore black armbands to honor the victims during a recent match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians, as well as during another washed-out game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings.
A tweet from the BCCI Women summed it up well: “The Indian Cricket Team is wearing black armbands today to pay homage to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. We stand in solidarity with the affected families.” [[Link to BCCI Women tweet](https://twitter.com/BCCIWomen/status/1916439723947577433)]
Recent events heightened tensions in the region. In the Baisaran Valley of Jammu and Kashmir, terrorists opened fire, resulting in the tragic death of 26 people, many of whom were tourists. The Resistance Front, linked to the outlawed Lashkar-e-Taiba group, has claimed responsibility for this horrific attack.
Match Highlights:
In lighter news, India started strong in the tri-series with a decisive victory over Sri Lanka, winning by nine wickets. Bowling first, India restricted Sri Lanka to just 147 runs. Hasini Perera managed to score 30 runs, while Kavisha Dilhari added 25 runs. India’s Sneh Rana was exceptional, taking three wickets. Deepti Sharma and Nallapureddy Charani also contributed with two wickets each.
Chasing 148 runs, India easily achieved their target, losing only one wicket. Pratika Rawak stood out with an unbeaten 50 runs off 62 balls, while Smriti Mandhana and Harleen Deol contributed with 43 and 48 not out, respectively. This victory marks a strong start for India in the series against Sri Lanka and South Africa.
Such expressions of solidarity and sportsmanship amid adversity highlight the resilience of the sports community, reminding us of the power of unity in the face of tragedy.
